How Much Space Do Chickens Need?

Getting your coop size right is the single most important decision for a healthy, happy flock. Too little space causes stress, feather-picking, bullying, and disease. Our chicken coop size calculator above uses the standard guidelines poultry keepers rely on.

The basic rules of thumb

  • Inside the coop: 2-4 square feet per standard chicken. Use the lower end only if birds free-range all day; use 4 sq ft if they are confined.
  • Outdoor run: 8-10 square feet per chicken. More is always better.
  • Nesting boxes: 1 box for every 3-4 hens. Hens happily share.
  • Roost bar: 8-12 inches of roost length per bird so everyone can perch at night.

Why bigger is better

Crowded chickens get bored and aggressive. Extra space lowers stress, cuts disease risk, keeps bedding drier, and makes cleaning easier. When in doubt, size up.

Frequently asked questions

How much space do 6 chickens need? About 18 sq ft of coop and 60 sq ft of run for standard breeds, plus 2 nesting boxes.

How much space do 10 chickens need? About 30 sq ft of coop and 100 sq ft of run for standard breeds, plus 3 nesting boxes.

Can a coop be too big? In very cold climates a huge coop is harder for birds to keep warm, but for most people, more space is better. Match coop size to your flock and climate.
